I used competitor user journeys to gather an understanding of the steps a user takes to complete a specific task or achieve a goal within a competing product. For my app development, competitor user journeys will be a valuable tool for understanding the user experience of competing products, and for identifying opportunities for differentiating and improving your own app.
By studying competitor user journeys of specific processes, I will gain a deeper understanding of how users interact with competing products and what their experience is like. This will help me to identify areas where my app could be improved or differentiated.
I can also identify features or functionality that users find valuable or useful, and incorporate these elements into my own app. I will also identify areas where my app could be improved or streamlined to provide a better user experience.
By comparing my own app's user journey to those of competitors, I will also be able to get a sense of how my app compares and where I have an opportunity to differentiate. This will help me to identify areas where my app could be improved or where I have a competitive advantage.
I have selected the following user journeys from each app for a specific purpose. Each competitor excels in their own areas such as searching, purchasing tickets, tracking journeys, and planning journeys and I wanted to understand the best practice for each of these areas.
I also picked our several other experiences from these apps that I particularly liked. Not all of them were directly linked to the main features of my app but I thought some of them enhanced the experience a little and made the apps a bit more user-friendly. For example, I really liked the feature that City mapper provided for delays and Issues with specific services. This feature enabled users to stay informed of potential disruptions to their travel and allowed them to plan alternatively. I also liked City mapper's ability to few an entire service route, so that you could see all of the stops that it passed, providing some clarity for the user.
This competitive analysis was a valuable exercise that helped me to identify a range of features and functionality in competing apps that I could potentially incorporate into my own app. By picking out different features I liked and analyzing them in more detail, I was able to identify the most promising and impactful ideas to focus on, and to begin developing a roadmap for implementing these features.
Now that I have an understanding of competitor processes, I feel better equipped to move forward with my development. I will now map out the ticketing process for Translink to better understand the different types of tickets and methods of purchasing and using train & bus tickets. From this, I will be able to enhance the experience of using tickets and incorporate it into the rest of my app.
